The Memories We Keep Are The Ones Stuck To The Soles Of Our Feet

The Memories… is a physical theatre performance born from the visceral world of Cecil Skotnes’ The Last Supper. It breathes life into the canvas, linking its Judeo-Christian imagery to the fractured global landscape of today.

Through a fusion of text, sound, and movement, the work traces the scars of war, the rigidity of nation-state borders, and the quiet suffering of those left behind. Devised and workshopped through experimental processes, each performance emerges uniquely, shaped by multiple languages, shifting texts, improvised physical scores, and live, in-the-moment experimentation.

Staged at the Javett Art Centre in Pretoria, the piece moves through a series of installation-like environments, guiding spectators from the main gallery space into the foyer and beyond. As the performer travels through these spatial thresholds, the audience follows, becoming part of a shared, transitional journey where the boundaries between performance, installation, and embodied witnessing dissolve.
